Elections to Lok Sabha, the Lower House of the Indian Parliament, constitute the biggest democratic exercise on our planet. More than 700 million voters will elect 543 representatives to the 15th Lok Sabha in nation-wide elections to be held in five phases from 16 April-13 May 2009. The exercise will involve mobilization of millions of officials to conduct polling through more than 1.3 million electronic voting machines.
Over 800,000 polling stations are spread over a diverse landscape in a continent-sized country spanning the lush green ghats of the peninsula in the South, fertile shores in the East, deserts of Rajasthan in the West and snow-clad Himalayas in the North.
